Portrait Commissions By Kate Geiger
Portraits are my passion and I love working with clients to create an original work of art featuring someone they love. My portraits are done in a traditional realist style, but with a contemporary approach. I open spots for commissions a few times a years. Contact me to inquire about my current commission schedule.
HEAD AND SHOULDERs
(SMALL PORTRAIT OPTION)
This format is on the smaller side and features just the face, head, neck and shoulders, usually with a fairly simple background. Background ideas could include simple neutral tones, suggested landscape, or a patterned background. Because of the straightforward nature of these head and shoulder portraits, turnaround time is generally quicker than a more elaborate portrait. They are a great option for small gifts or even having several members painted individually, but hung together as a series.

8X10” $400
12X12” $500

FRequently asked questions
Please read through the information on this page to get a better understanding of the commissioned portrait process. As always, if you have any additional questions, feel free to reach out to me!
Do you work from photos?
Yes! I paint portraits exclusively from photographs. Have a photograph in mind? I often work from my client’s own high resolution photographs. Nowadays, most smartphones can capture a photograph with enough resolution to serve as a decent painting reference photo. Older photos and printed photographs can be tricky, but Im always happy to take a look at what you have. I do my best to work with any photo reference that requested of me, however, if I feel a photo cannot provide enough detail, I wont feel comfortable producing a portrait from that photo because ultimately, you wont be happy with the work.
Can you take the photo for me?
I am happy to arrange a photoshoot for your painting if you would prefer I take the photograph. I have professional camera equipment and have been photographing my models for over 20 years. I am willing to travel up to 50 miles for a photoshoot if you would like to set that up. I charge a $250 photoshoot fee for local shoots and $300 for a travel shoot.
When can I get my portrait done?
I accept only a limited certain number of portrait commissions a year and I often have a waitlist. Turnaround time varies due to a number of factors including the size of portrait and the length of current waitlist. In general, a portrait can take anywhere form 4-12 weeks based on when I am able to start the painting (smaller portraits average 4 to 6 weeks, whereas medium sized portraits can take up to 6 to 12 weeks). Need a portrait by a certain date? Maybe I can accommodate you! The best way to find out an accurate time frame is to contact me directly and I can give you a up to date idea of my commission schedule.
How does payment work?
Contact me and I will put together a quote for your painting based on size and complexity of the photograph you would like made into a photo, When I am able to start your portrait, a 50% deposit is due to start the project and the remaining 50% is due upon completion of your painting
Do you offer flexible payment options?
I also will accept payment for your portrait in 4 to 6 month increments for paintings over $1000. This is a great option if you are interested in a larger piece, but are not on a time constraint. This gives you the flexibility of paying little by little, while also giving me the time to complete the project!
